Luna Park Payerne

Luna Park Payerne is a travelling Luna Park that comes to Payerne every year in the end of August. The park stays in place for 3 days before it closes. In the canton of Vaud Luna Park Payerne is the second largest Luna Park next after Luna Park Lausanne.

Luna Park Payerne is the seventh and final stop on the annual tour of the Luna Park in the central and southern parts of Switzerland. Starting in Sion and ending in Payerne, the tour visits a total of 7 Swiss cities from March to August. You can read more about the Luna Parks in Switzerland here.

In Payerne the Luna Park arrives in at same time where the annual shooting competition is held (“Tirage De Payerne”). On the saturday morning more than 500 shooters compete at the shooting range in Vernex (“Stand de tir de Vernex”). Around 11.00 the winner is crowned on the Place du Marché a couple of houndred meters from the shooting range.

Opening hours

Luna Park Payerne does not have any official opening hours but they tend to follow the shooting event. Our experience from recent years is that it will usually have the following opening hours:

The opening hours above are not necessarily are the same every year and can be subtle to change. This can also happen in case of rescheduling, bad weather etc.

Transport

Since Payerne is a relatively small city, it is very easy to get around. Place des Tireurs de Payerne where the Luna Park is situated is only a couple of hundred meters from the city centre and the train station. You can find information about the public transportation in Payerne here.

The Luna Park is also easy accessible by car, although you might have to park a small distance from the park.

Luna Park Ticino

For over a century – or from 1915 to be more exact – the Pellerani family has been entertaining the locals in the Italian and German speaking parts of Switzerland with their Travelling Luna park that also goes by the name “Luna Park Pellerani”.

Each year they settle in the largest cities in Ticino and the German speaking cantons. Last year the dates where the following:

The Pellerani family

As mentioned earlier the Pellerani family has been touring certain parts of Switzerland since 1915. This has made the family famous locally. Today the head of the operation is a man named Michele Pellerani,  who was born on thje 13th of April 1958 in Lugano, and litterally is the descendant of a family of funfairs.

Luna Park Sion is a travelling Luna Park that comes to Sion every year in the period mid-march to the end of March. The park stays in place 6 – 14 days before it moves on to Fribourg.

Transport

Place de la Planta is a part of the city center of Sion. It is a 5 minute walk away from the train station. There is also parking area at Place de la Planta, but it is often full when events like Luna Park Sion takes place.

In summary; you can take the train to the central station and walk or find a parking nearby and walk. There is also buses (“Bus Sédunois” or “PostBus” operated by CarPostal) that can take you there. You can read more about the public transportation in Sion here.

Place de la Plantas in Sion is home to many festive events, including the annual Luna Park funfair in Sion that takes place in March.

Luna Park Thun

Luna Park Thun is a travelling Luna Park that comes to Thun every year from the beginning of May to the beginning of June. The park stays in Thun for 10 – 11 days before it heads towards Lausanne.

Luna Park Thun is the fifth stop on the annual tour of the Luna Park in the central and southern parts of Switzerland. The tour starts in Sion in March and ends in Payerne in August, visiting 7 different cities in total. Before it comes to Thun, it stays in Lucerne, Geneva, Fribourg and Sion respectively. In Thun the Luna Park is also called the annual “Thuner Budeler” and has been taking place for over 60 years. The Thuner Budeler has become a tradition where the Luna Park is accompanied by different sorts of entertainment such as musical spectacles, food trucks etc., which all ensures the locally famous “Chilbistimmung” (a description of the joyfull atmosphere at the event). The word “Chilbi” is of Swiss German origin and stems from the word “Church” (Chilche).

Luna Park Thun and Thuner Budeler takes place at the same time as the Pentecost, which allows the locals to profit of the official holiday Whit Monday. On Whit Monday there is a church ceremony held by the local church and musical schools.

Transport

The location at Lachenparkplatz has specifically been chosen to host Luna Park Thun because it is spacious and very well served by the public transport. You can find more information about public transportation in Thun here.

By car it is also easy to access as Gwattstrasse is one of the main roads of Thun. Eventhough Luna Park Thun is held on a parking space you will need to find parking elsewhere, as the Luna Park takes up all the space on the parking lot.

Luna Park Lucerne

Luna Park Lucerne is a travelling Luna Park that comes to Lucerne each year from the end of April to the beginning of May. The park stays in Lucerne for 10 days before it reloctes to Thun.

Luna Park Lucerne is the fourth stop on the annual tour of Luna Park in central and southern Switzerland. The tour begins in Sion in March and ends in Payerne in August. In between it visits 6 other cities making the total number of cities visited 8. Before coming to Lucerne, it settles in Geneva, Fribourg and Sion respectively. Each year when Luna Park is in Lucerne, the city also hosts another great event: LUGA – a regional farmer’s market with approximately 450 stands offering a large variety of regional goods. Each year they also focus on a specific Swiss canton, which makes the event a new experience every year.

Transport

The location at Messe Luzern AG is easy to access by public transport as it is served by a train and has its’ own trainstop: “Luzern Allmend/Messe”. It also has a busterminal next to it called “Allmend/Messe”. It is adviced that you make use of public transport when going to Luna Park Lucerne, as the parking spaces will most likely be occupied by other cars as well as the caravans of the Luna Park personnel. If you chose to go by car it is easy to find Luna Park Lucerne as Horwerstrasse is one of the main roads in the city. There are parking spaces available, but as stated before they might be occupied.

Luna Park Fribourg

Luna Park Fribourg is a travelling Luna Park that comes to Fribourg every year from end March to mid-April. The park stays in place for an average of 17 days before it goes to Geneva.

Luna Park Fribourg is the second stop on the annual tour of the Luna Park in the middle and south of Switzerland. The tour takes off in Sion and ends in Payerne, and visits 7 Swiss cities in total. You can get further information about the Luna Parks in Switzerland here.

Compared to some of the other Luna Parks (especially Geneva and Lausanne) Luna Park Fribourg is quite small. It has significantly less stands, attractions and visitors.

Luna Park Locarno

Luna Park Locarno – also known as “Locarno Giostre” – is a travelling Luna Park that comes to Locarno every year from mid-May to the beginning of June.

It is entirely owned by a single family, the Pelleranis, who has been entertaining the local population since 1915. Luna Park Locarno is a part of their annual tour in Ticino, which is the Italian part of Switzerland. Locarno is normally the 5th stop on their tour, which usually consists of 9 stops in total.

Luna Park Locarno is located next to Lido Locarno, which is a waterpark that has waterslides, thermal spas and other water activities. It also offers a restaurant, lounge bar and a snack bar. Occasionally it hosts concerts and other events. You can read more about Lido Locarno here.

The local electric company (Società elettrica sopracenerina) and the special effects cinematographer Vittorio Storaro has made Luna Park Locarno famous with its’ spectacular lighting.

The dates for Luna Park Locarno 2020 has not been released yet, but we will keep this page updated and post the exact dates as soon as possible.

Luna Park Locarno is located next to the lake side of Lago Maggiore. You can easily go there by car, bus or even boat. The busstop (bus number 2) is right next to the Luna Park and is called “Locarno, Lido” after the waterpark Lido Locarno at the same location. Luna Park Lausanne

Luna Park Lausanne is a travelling Luna Park, that arrives in Lausanne each year in the middle of May and leaves in the middle of June, where it heads to Payerne. Lausanne is the sixth stop on the annual tour of the Luna Park in the central and southern parts of Switzerland.

It is one of the most important of the parks in the French-speaking region (Suisse romande), and also one of the largest Luna Parks in Switzerland.

You can get to Luna Park Lausanne by car, metro, bus and even boat.

  • Car: There is a big parking facility underneath Ouchy. You can walk from the parking to Luna Park Lausanne in approximately 5 minutes.
  • Metro: The Metro 2 (M2) takes you directly from the city centre to Ouchy where you can walk to Luna Park Lausanne in approximately 5 minutes. Take the M2 from any station direction Ouchy and get off at the end station (Ouchy).
  • Bus: The bus number 2 direction Maladière-Lac takes you extremely close to Luna Park Lausanne. Get off at the bus stop Bellerive – Pêcheurs. Walking distance from the bus stop to the Luna Park is less than 100 meters. The bus number 2 also stops next to the metro station Ouchy.

Location

Luna Park Lausanne is located in an area called Bellerive which is situated between the touristic harbour Ouchy and the green leisure area Vidy. The site that hosts Luna Park Lausanne is a parking area that is also used for other events. Examples include sports events such as The Color Run. Some years it is also filled with spectators who watches the UEFA European Championship or the FIFA World Cup though these normally are shown at the Place de Navigation at Ouchy.
